Walking Tour of Dublin

Contained within a relatively compact area are some of the most appealing places of interest to be found in any capital city of Europe. Dublin is the home of Guinness, probably the most recognized Irish brand and a ‘must sample’ for every visitor. Birthplace of literary giants including Swift, Wilde, Joyce and Yeats, some of the most notable contributors to English Literature, their early years in their native city provided much of the basis of their creativity and inspiration.

Dublin Castle, the historical nerve centre of political power in Ireland for more than eight centuries has been carefully preserved and contains the Chester Beatty Library, a vast collection of Oriental Art and Artefacts bequeathed to the nation by a mining magnate. The theft of the Irish Crown Jewels from a strongroom in the Castle in 1907 remains one of Ireland’s great unsolved mysteries and provides an intriguing tale of deception and machinations.

Founded in 1592, Trinity College is regarded as one of the most prestigious universities in the world and is home to the Book of Kells, an illuminated manuscript Gospel book. Concealed from marauding Vikings and safely stored through subsequent centuries of strife, the book is a work of staggering beauty and skill and is perhaps Ireland’s single most important national treasure.

The National Gallery of Ireland hosting permanent and temporary exhibitions, features perhaps Caravaggio’s most famous painting, The Taking of Christ. This medieval masterpiece lay undiscovered until relatively recently, hanging in the dining room of a Jesuit community and is now on permanent loan to the gallery. A peaceful environment with an eye catching display around every corner.
